Daily Bread - NOV/09/07

Matthew 5:45 - So that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven for his sun rises upon the evil and the good and sends rain upon the righteous and the unrighteous.

Righteousness and unrighteousness are not abstract concepts that are set forth to distinguish those who have accepted Jesus as their Savior as opposed to those who have refused Him. These two words are paralleled to good and evil throughout both the Old and New Testaments. The person who is unrighteous is the one who is a violator of the ways of God in the broadest sense. The Bible is very clear that the unrighteous (those who do iniquity) will not inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9). Both righteousness and unrighteousness are defined by the behavior of an individual. The actions of righteousness are those behaviors that comply with the ways of God and the unrighteous are those who violate His ways. The standard of righteousness is the ways of God who is: righteous in all of His ways and Holy in all of His works (Psalms 145:17). God has transformed us by the miracle power of the new birth and commanded us to walk even as He walks and be perfect even as He is perfect (Matthew 5:48; 1 John 2:6; 3:3, 7; 4:17; Colossians 2:6; Revelation 3:21). God in His patience and longsuffering is Himself dedicated to training us how to walk in this glorious realm, but we must be willing to participate. Our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, has made the distinction between the good and the evil and what is profane and what is holy. If we will mark well what must not be allowed in our lives, God will make sure that we will be kept from its power. There is no sin that can impose itself upon us because we are not under its dominion (Romans 6).

Like righteousness, the Greek word for unrighteous (adikos) has several synonyms: unlawful (athemitos), warped (skolios), deceitful (poneros), evil (kakos), bad (phaulos) , sinful (harmatolos), ungodly (asebeia) and iniquity (anomia). God has devoted much of the message of the Bible to giving us a thorough understanding of these practices. Although God blesses the unrighteous with the blessings of a life here and now He does not have a relationship with them and will ultimately cast them out of His presence forever (Luke 13:27). The unrighteous are those who practice iniquity (anomia) as is underscored in the parallel passage in Matthew 7:23 which uses unrighteousness (adikos) instead. The unrighteous are those who are ungodly (Romans 1:18). As the children of the Almighty God we are commanded to refuse all of these filthy things and perfect holiness in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1).

Who shall not fear you Lord as for me I will.
Who shall not honor you Lord as for me I will.
Who shall not follow you Lord as for me I will.

Romans 5:19 - For as by the disobedience of one man many were made sinners also then through the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Many people wonder: just how righteous has Jesus made us? The question may be answered by evaluating just how much of a sinner Adam's disobedience made man. Then once we recognize the real effect Adam's disobedience had then we can appreciate the consequences of the obedience of Jesus - which has even a greater effect for those who will hear and obey. Fundamental to salvation is that we believe in righteousness and receive the gift of righteousness (Romans 10:10; 5:21; 2 Corinthians 5:21). If we reject this so great a salvation then we reject the word of God that produces the faith for the miracle of righteousness. Paul further establishes the reality of the change that was brought into our lives in the next chapter by making known that just as we were the servants of sin we are now the servants of righteousness (Romans 6:17-19).

As Adam's disobedience opened up the floodgates of iniquity, the obedience of Christ opened up the floodgates of righteousness and brought an end of the tyrannical reign of sin for all those who are willing to obey. Men may choose to continue on in their sins but the fact remains that the opportunity to come into this so great a salvation is extended to all mankind. The redemptive blood of Jesus was poured out not for our sins only but also for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). In choosing to accept the gift of righteousness that has been provided for us, the Holy Spirit comes into our lives to teach us how to live this life of righteousness. Every day we must give ourselves to learning and growing in the knowledge of God as He instructs us and leads us in the path of righteousness for His name's sake. Today let's make our calling and election sure (2 Peter 1:10). Two ways are set before us: the way of life or death. We may choose the realm in which Adam led all humanity or the realm into which Christ Jesus now leads. If you are willing to follow, you may be absolutely certain that no matter what happens the Holy Spirit will always continue to lead and to guide. We may all confidently say:

Jesus is my Savior.
The Holy Spirit is my helper and my guide.
The Almighty God is my Father and so I say I will remain here forever.

1 Corinthians 6:18 -Flee fornication! Every sin that a man does is without the body but the fornicator sins against the body itself.

The act of fornication is underscored by the Greek word itself, which is 'pornia.' From this word we also derive the word 'porno' which, like the Greek word 'porne,' refers to the selling of sexuality. One of the most dominant practices of pornia today is Pornography. Pornography also crosses over into another activity of the demonic realm called lasciviousness which is the practice of inciting sexual lust. This flood of pornography that has swept over the earth has further expanded the meaning of fornication. It is one of the primary focuses of the demonic attack against humanity. Satan desires to destroy man and the way that he does so is through sin. There is nothing good about sin, and it must not be accepted by the people of God. Our society - which has been overrun by the demonic - wants us to accept fornication as normal, entertaining, and recreational. Just like the ancient city of Corinth that was steeped in pagan philosophy, our children are taught in society to accept sexual immorality as a normal part of life.

Fornication by definition may be understood as every extramarital sexual practice. People need to come to realize that sexual pleasure is not worth the consequences that it brings both now and in eternity. The practice is so horrific to God that in the Old Testament the daughter of a Priest who committed fornication was to be burned alive (Leviticus 21:9). Furthermore, no child of fornication could be accepted as part of the holy community of God's people (Deuteronomy 23:3). The toleration - and even more the promotion - of fornication in the Old Testament subjected the whole nation to divine judgment (Leviticus 19:29). God warns everyone against the snare of the pornia in Proverbs 5 and Proverbs 6:24-35, revealing that there is a demonic snare so entangling that a person goes down into hell and can never escape.

The New Testament is no less severe with the practice of fornication. Yes, there is mercy and forgiveness with God, but it must also be remembered that when the woman was taken in the act of adultery Jesus said, "go and sin no more." The Spirit of God makes it very clear in this passage that our bodies are the Temples of God (vs. 19). We have been purchased with the blood of Jesus and made new by the Spirit of God so that we can glorify God in our bodies (vs. 20). Previously in this same message, Paul said that if anyone defiles the Temple of God then God would destroy such a person (3:16-17). How serious is Jesus about this? He said if your eye offends you pluck it out; for it is better to enter into life having one eye than to be cast into hell with two (Matthew 5:29). How many times has God warned us in the New Testament that if we do these things we will die? Let us consider that God knows the ways of life not man. Let's obey what He has to say and honor His commandments lest we find ourselves taken prisoner by an eternity without God (Mark 7:21; Acts 15:20,29; 21:25; Romans 1:29; 1 Corinthians 5:1,9,10,11; 6:9; 7:2; 10:8; 2 Corinthians 12:21; Galatians 5:19; Ephesians 5:3; Colossians 3:5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; Jude 7).

Revelation 21:8 - But as for the fearful and unbelieving the sinful and polluted and murderers and fornicators and magicians and all liars shall have their part in the lake burning with fire and sulfur; this is the second death.

The second death is for all of those who do iniquity and refuse the only remedy that has the power to turn a sinner from iniquity unto righteousness (1 Peter 2:24; Romans 6:18). That remedy is provided for us through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus we are made pure and holy so that we can live righteously (Titus 2:14; Ephesians 4:24; Philippians 1:11; Revelation 22:11; Ephesians 1:4; 1 Peter 1:15, 16). God worked the miracle to give us a new heart and a new spirit so that we would be established in His own nature. He did this at a great expense and sacrifice to Himself. God has warned us over and over again that those who practice iniquity will die (Matthew 7:23; 2 Timothy 2:19; Titus 2:14). God who is loving and merciful is also true to His judgments (1 Peter 1:17; Colossians 3:25). The people who lived in the time of Noah or during the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah will not be judged differently from someone who attends church regularly (Isaiah 5:20; Ezekiel 44:23; Proverbs 20:10; 11:1; Deuteronomy 25:15; Matthew 12:41-42). God does not have one judgment for one class of people and a different kind of judgment for another. He has all the mercy and forgiveness that we could possibly ever need in Christ Jesus. There is all the strength, wisdom, and ability granted for us by the Holy Spirit but we must be willing to see every form of iniquity and sin come to an end in our lives (John 5:14; 8:11; Romans 6:2; 1 Peter 2:24; 4:1; 1 John 1:6; 2:15-16; 3:5; 4:20; 5:4).

God has not left us to wonder what sin and unrighteousness is; He has named the deeds that He hates and has condemned them and all those who do such things. The list is found in the sermons of Jesus, of John, of Paul, of Peter, of James, and Jude (Matthew 15:19; Mark 7:21-22; Romans 1:29-31; Ephesians 5:3- 6; Colossians 3:5-8; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 Timothy 1:9-10; Titus 3:3; James 3:14; 1 Peter 4:3; Jude 7-16). Everyone who was used by God to deliver His message to us has all warned us and made it very clear what behaviors are condemned to an eternal judgment that is called the second death. Salvation is not by works, but we can be certain that the works of righteousness are the evidence of salvation (James 2:20-26; John 15:2; Ephesians 5:9; Colossians 1:10; Matthew 7:16-23).

God has a great inheritance for us now and throughout eternity if we will just be willing to learn His ways. The ways of God are so lovely and wonderful, full of love, joy, and peace. His ways of life are so much better and full of much more pleasure and splendor than can be found in the ways of sin and darkness. God has freely granted to us both the desire and the ability to do that which is righteous, pure, and holy. The first message of the gospel that we must hear is that we must turn from our wicked works to serve the living God. God has granted us the gift of repentance and made all the resources of heaven available to us for our success. What more could He do as He struggles to keep us from the eternal judgment of the second death? There is no promise of salvation for those who continue in sin anywhere in the Bible. Therefore, those who teach such things are deceivers and liars. Is it okay to commit adultery? Every honest child of God would say, no! What must you do if you commit such an act of sin? One must repent and ask God to cleanse them from their sin and empower them never to do it again. What if you do not repent? Then you will die in your sins? Will a person who dies in their sin hear Father say, "Well done my good and faithful servant?" Certainly not. Therefore, today make a distinction between that which is good and evil and between the holy and the profane. Give yourselves over to the ways of God and He will make sure that you are established in them.

2 Thessalonians 1: 8-9 - In a flame of fire giving vengeance to the ones who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who will pay the penalty of everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His strength.

It could not be possible to imagine a more horrifying place than hell. It is a place where the soul and the body never die but are constantly in the tortuous throes of the most agonizing death. The eternal death of hell has no mercy, no compassion, no hope of ever changing but is continuous and forever. It is a place where God's presence does not exist and where only the blackest darkness of a hopeless forever is engulfed in flames and agonizing screams of the tormented. It is a prison where there is no rest, no water, no pardon, and the dwelling place of every evil and wicked thing that has ever existed (Matthew 25:46; Isaiah 66:24; Mark 9:44, 46, 48).

The only possible way that anyone could ever begin to understand why a loving and merciful God would create such a place of eternal destruction and torment in His wrath is to understand how God feels about sin. The concept of sin in the mind of men at best is something that God does not like but is an irresistible and undeniable opportunity for pleasure. Yet God views sin and death in the same category. To God, sin is the most hideous acts of injustice against the sanctity and security of life. God does not see sin as a human failure that arises out of human frailty but the acts of high treason against the life that He has given. I am certain that God feels the same way about sin that men feel about hell: repulsive and unimaginable.

God who is not willing that anyone suffer the judgment of hell - which was created for the devil and his angels - sent His only begotten Son so that we could be set free from the dominion of death and sin (Hebrews 2:14; 2 Timothy 1:10; Romans 8:2). The realm of death is the demonic realm that claims every person (Romans 5:12,17; 1:32; 6:16,23; 1 Corinthians 15:22). In the realm of death, the fruits of death are the acts of sin that dominate the lives of men. It is because of sin that people go to hell - whether they are believers in God or not. Jesus came to deliver us from the dominion of sin and the dominion of death so that death would have no claim on us now and throughout eternity. He delivered us from the power of darkness so that we would no longer commit the acts of sin that have for their just penalty, death (Romans 1:32; 2:8-9; 6:21,23; Romans 7:5; 8:13; James 1:15; 1 John 3:4- 10; Galatians 5:21). The gospel that Jesus preached was one that was uncompromising: "if your eye offends you, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish and not that your whole body should be cast into hell (Matthew 5:29; 19:9; Mark 9:47). Do not be deceived! God will not be mocked: whatever you sow you will reap. If you sow to your flesh you will reap corruption, but if you sow to the Spirit you will reap eternal life (Galatians 6:7-8). There is a penalty for sin! It does not matter what church you go to or how much you say you believe; sin must cease. God has made a way through Jesus Christ our Lord. Will you accept His way? Be certain that as surely as it is appointed unto every man to die, it is also appointed that you will then face the judgment: and the penalty for sin is death (Hebrews 9:27). Today, lay hold on Christ Jesus and the power and authority that He has given to us to overcome every form of sin.
